LIBRARY AND ITS SERVICES

Registration

Who can become a library user?
Students and employees of MU or registered members of Masaryk University Alumni and Friends Association can become registered users of the library; other users can access library collections only in the form of in-house loans.

What do I need to register?
An ISIC card, ITIC or another chip card issued by Masaryk University. If you do not own any of these cards, you will receive a card issued by the library.

How and when do I need to renew my registration?
Registration and registration renewal is done at the registration desk (on the ground floor, at the back of the reading room). You need to renew your registration if SelfCheck or catalogue alerts you that “your card has expired” or if the librarian at the circulation desk tells you that you need to renew your registration.

Loans

Where can I borrow books?
Mon–Fri from 9:00 to 17:00 at the circulation desk on the ground floor (the first desk in the reading room) or at any time during opening hours using the SelfCheck terminal (in the lobby on the ground floor).

The circulation desk is closed, is there any other place where I can borrow or return books?
Yes, you can borrow books using the SelfCheck terminal situated in the lobby of the library by the information desk. You can borrow books using SelfCheck during the entire opening hours of the library, including weekends. SelfCheck cannot be used to return books.

How do I borrow a book using the SelfCheck terminal?
To borrow books using the SelfCheck terminal, you need a valid ISIC, ITIC, X card, employee card or a MU library card and you must be registered in the Central Library of the FA MU. The instructions on how to borrow books are displayed on the SelfCheck terminal, or if you need assistance, the library staff at the information desk will be happy to help you.

It seems that I cannot borrow a book using the SelfCheck terminal. Why?
In some cases (e.g. expired card, outstanding debt, exceeded limit of the number of books) the system will not allow a loan to be made. In the event that your card has expired, contact the staff at the registration desk that will renew it. In other cases, you will have to come to the circulation desk on weekdays between 9:00 and 17:00 and settle your debt or return some of the books.

How will I know that a document cannot be borrowed home?
These items have in the catalogue in the “Item status” column the record “in-house loan” or “in-house loan CLOSED STACKS”. In open stacks, these items are marked with an orange dot. In-house status applies also to all journals and newspapers.

How many books can I borrow as a student and for how long?
The maximum number of books you can have on your account at one time is 30; loan period for the majority of outside loans is 30 days (in some cases it is reduced to 14 days). You can renew your loan (provided that the book has not been reserved by another user), but the maximum loan period of a renewed loan is 3 months.

What are the sanctions for late return of books?
CZK 5 per book per day.

How will I find out which books I have borrowed and when they are due?
Sign in to the catalogue (personal identification number (UČO) and IS MU secondary password), click on “My account” – here you can check which books you have borrowed and when they are due, whether you have been fined for any overdue loans, which books you have reserved, renew your loan or check the history of your loans.

How can I renew my loan?
Sign in to the online library catalogue (personal identification number (UČO) and IS MU secondary password), click on “My account” in the top menu – a record containing information about your loans, reservations, etc. will be displayed. Click on “Loans” – this will display a list of your loans, click on the underlined number of the title that you want to renew and click on “Renew”. You can only renew documents that have not been reserved by another user.

Why can I not renew my loan?
A loan cannot be renewed, if the document has been reserved by another user, if you have exceeded the loan period, if you have already had a book for 3 months or if your card has expired.

Can I borrow and return books during weekends?
You can borrow books any time using the SelfCheck terminal (in the lobby on the ground floor). Books can be returned only at the circulation desk Mon–Fri 9:00–17:00.

Can I borrow a book with in-house status home overnight or for the weekend?
No, we do not lend books with in-house status overnight or for the weekend because the library is open also during weekends.

In the reservation form that will open, do not forget to fill in the date until which you are interested in the document. You can only reserve a document that is borrowed by another user!

When will a reserved book be prepared for me and how long do I have to collect it?
